WHAT DOES A ROUTER DO?

The ABC’s Regarding Routers
What is a router?

Router A ROUTER is the final step before the Internet reaches your computer.

How does your computer access the Internet?
It is a four step process:
1. Internet Service Provider (i.e. Verizon/Optimum)
2. Modem
3. Router
4. Device

1. First, the Internet Service Provider (ISP) connects your location to their network.
2. Then, the ISP connects a modem to the line which is brought into your location, so that a computer or router can connect to the Internet.
3. You connect a router to the modem. (Sometimes, a modem and router can be in one device.)
4. The router provides the internal network for your home or office.

What does the router do for you?

A ROUTER creates a network. Generally speaking, routers have wireless capabilities. Therefore, it is the router which provides wireless Internet to your home or office. A router generally has four or five ethernet ports, which allows you to plug multiple devices into the router directly (as opposed to a modem which only has one ethernet port.) If you need more ports, you can purchase a network switch which provides additional ports.

Once all your devices are connected to the router, (either by plugging it in or wirelessly) they are all on the same network. By being on the same network, all the devices can talk to each other. Therefore, you can transfer documents and share printers as if you are in a big office.

Is a router secure?

A ROUTER actually makes your computer safer!
How?
A router is a(n extra) firewall. A firewall prevents outsiders from entering into your network and computers.

If I have wireless Internet, can I be hacked?

YES. We strongly recommend locking your wireless Internet, which will prevent people from connecting wirelessly to your network.
Why is it important to lock the wireless connection?
Once someone connects to your network, they can access your information.
What if you don’t want to allow your guests to access your data?

A GUEST NETWORK allows you to provide an Internet connection, without access to your data. This is highly recommended for businesses which allow clients to connect to their wireless network, since you want to provide wireless Internet to clients, without compromising your data.
