INTERNET SPEED
How do you determine your speed?
The way we test our clients’ Internet speed is by doing a speed test. The site which we use to run the speed test is: http://www.speedtest.net/.
Once on the site, be sure to click on the correct “begin test” button.
(We have found many times the ads on the page to be offering their own tests, either for Internet speeds or virus tests. Therefore, when doing the speed test please make sure to select the “BEGIN TEST” button as seen below.)
Real test
After you run the test, you will see three numbers:
1. Ping
2. Download Speed
3. Upload Speed
What do the numbers represent?
PING, which stands for Packet Internet Groper, determines the delay between the transfer of data between two computers (in this case, it is generally referring to the server you are connecting to do the speed test). The lower the number the better since you want the transfer between computers to go quicker.
DOWNLOAD SPEED is at what speed your computer can retrieve data from the Internet. The higher the speed the faster and less issues you will have.
UPLOAD SPEED is the speed at what you can send data to the Internet. The upload speed is generally smaller than the download speed, since most users tend to be retrieving more data then sending data.
What are “good” numbers?
The answer is that it depends on your service provider and which package you are subscribed to. Determining the correct size depends on what you are doing.
If you are you using your Internet connection for simple email or if you are running a business with numerous computers and VoIP phones, the speeds needed to provide quality Internet connectivity will obviously vary.
