Android Phishing

ANDROID SAFETY
Important information regarding Google Play
What is phishing?
How does it apply to your Android?
Why is the issue only on Androids and not Apples?
What is phishing?
Phishing is when someone is maliciously attempting to get information from you.
How is it done?
By setting up a website which looks like the real/legitimate site. Users enter their credentials (thinking it is the real site) and then the one who set up the site, now has your credentials to use in the real site.
How does it apply to your Android?
google playWhen one downloads an app from the Google Play store, there is no built in safety net to make sure you are not being misled into downloading or purchasing an app which does not have honest intentions.
Why is this issue exclusive to Androids and not Apples?
Apple has a much stronger grip on its devices and App Store. It only allows certain apps into the App Store, thereby avoiding dishonest apps from hitting the market.
Android does not have any such safety measure in place and therefore Android users must be careful which apps they download.
One recent examples:
Blackberry announced that they will be allowing other platforms (IOS and Android) users to be able to use Blackberry messenger.
Someone took advantage of this information and created an Android App entitled “Blackberry Messenger” made by “RIM”.
When the 1,000’s of users downloaded the app, they were informed that it will become available June 27 and asked if they wanted to download some apps and bookmarks onto their phone.
As you can imagine, this app was not developed by Blackberry.
How tricky is it?
The app was developed by “RIM”. However, Blackberry is now known as Blackberry and not RIM!
