Windows Update

There are several common denominators across all software programs: they either get updated or get replaced. There are two main types of updates, either real programming updates or face lift updates. Microsoft is no exception. They distribute their updates on a regular basis. Read below to find out how you can have them installed, are they necessary, their different levels and when you should not install updates.

How do you get Windows Updates?

Windows provides four options to get the updates:

1. The updates get automatically installed.

2. The updates are downloaded automatically, but the user must accept to install them.

3. Computer notifies you that updates are available for you to download and install.

4. Don’t get bothered with updates.

How do you adjust your current Windows Update Settings?

Windows 7:

Select START

Right click on COMPUTER

Select PROPERTIES

Select WINDOWS UPDATE

Select CHANGE SETTINGS

Windows 8:

Go to the Windows 8 view

Start typing and select “WINDOWS UPDATE SETTINGS”

Select “SHOW CURRENT SETTING”

Select “CHOOSE HOW UPDATES GET INSTALLED”

Are they necessary, and are there different levels?

Windows divides updates between IMPORTANT, RECOMMENDED and OPTIONAL.

Generally speaking, all updates are good to do, but the important and recommended updates may affect your computer’s security, so therefore they are a good idea to install them without delay.

When should you not install the Windows Updates?

As the saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. While the updates are meant to improve your security or computer experience, if you are in middle of a busy season or finishing up your thesis, it may not be the best time to do these updates, and rather you should hold off until things have quieted down.
