DID YOU EVER WONDER WHAT THE FUNCTION KEYS DO?

In the olden days of DOS programs, the function keys were of great importance. Now with Windows, the function keys do not serve any purpose to most users. However, the function keys can assist by being used for a plethora of possible keyboard shortcuts.

Read below to see some how the function keys
can make your computer experience
even smoother!

 

F1

The F1 key is generally the help key.

Did you know?
WINDOWS KEY +F1 opens the Microsoft Windows Help and Support Center (this works when you are not already in a program.)

F2

The F2 key generally allows you to rename the highlighted icon or file in Windows.

Did you know?
CTRL+F2 displays the print preview in Microsoft Word.

F3

The F3 key generally opens the search feature.

Did you know?
SHIFT+F3 will change text selected in Microsoft Office programs from upper to lower case and vice versa.

F4

F4 will repeat the last action performed in Microsoft Office programs. (To test this function select some text and bold it, and then select other text and press F4.)

Did you know?
ALT+F4 will close the current active Window.

F5

F5 will refresh or reload your window, for the Internet or when you are viewing external data on your computer from a CD or external drive.

F5 will also open the “find, replace & go to” window in Microsoft Office programs.

Did you know?
F5 starts the slideshow in PowerPoint.

F6

F6 will move the cursor to the address bar in your browser.

Did you know?
CTRL+SHIFT+F6 will shift between currently opened Microsoft Office documents within a program. (If Excel is selected, then it will alternate between Excel spreadsheets. If Word is opened, it will alternate between the different Word documents currently opened.)

F7

F7 is the shortcut to start the spell checker in Microsoft Office products.

Did you know?
SHIFT+F7 will open the Thesaurus in Microsoft Office products.

F8 & F9

F8 and F9 are slightly different than the others, since there is no default function for the keys once in Windows (F8 is generally used to boot into Safe Mode.)

Once in Windows, it can be programmed to do whatever the user would like it to do.

F8 key to open up the

in order to streamline
your requests.

F10

F10 will activate the menu bar in the opened application

Did you know?
SHIFT +F10 is equivalent to right clicking on a highlighted icon, file or Internet link.

F11

F11 will make your browser open to full-screen mode (even larger then when “maximized”.)

F12

F12 will open the SAVE AS window in Microsoft Office products
Did you know?
SHIFT+F12 will save your work in a Microsoft Office product.
